Diageo Breaks Ground on New Distillery
On May 6, 2009, Diageo USVI and St. Croix Renaissance Group broke ground on the Captain Morgan rum distillery that will be built at St. Croix Renaissance Park. More than 200 people attended the ceremony including Governor John deJongh, Lt. Governor Gregory Francis, several USVI Senators, top executives from Diageo and Renaissance, and other local supporters of the project. Captain Morgan himself was also on hand for the celebration.
The distillery will begin production in 2011, and by 2012 will supply all rum used to make Captain Morgan branded products for the US market. The new facility will create between 40 and 70 jobs, more than 80 percent of which will be filled by local residents. At full production capacity the Diageo plant will produce 20 million proof gallons of rum per year and generate revenues of more than $100 million per year for the USVI government.
