Diageo, the world's leading premium drinks business, is building a 20 million gallon rum distillery on a 26-acre site at St. Croix Renaissance Park. The new facility will begin to produce rum in 2011 and by 2012 will supply all rum used to make Captain Morgan branded products of the United States. Captain Morgan is a global leader among premium spirits and is the second leading rum in the world. The distillery is being constructed with Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) principles, including a closed-loop water system, organic solids reclamation and storm water best management practices.
After looking at sites throughout the U.S. Virgin Islands, Diageo stated that "The Renaissance Park site was deemed the best based on location, transportation and logistical ease. The fact that Renaissance Park already is a zoned industrial site was key. It also provides easy access to the ocean with limited impact on the environment, has a dock for molasses shipments, and roads and infrastructure already in place. St. Croix Renaissance Group could also provide the distillery with water and electricity." -- Zsoka McDonald, Spokeswoman for Diageo
